Q: Why did you choose to become an orthopaedic surgeon?
My path to medicine began as a physical therapist and personal trainer. My first job as a therapist was at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; I practiced for 7 years while also developing a business as a fitness coach. During this time, I was able to work alongside many great surgeons who referred their patients to me. It was with this exposure that I realized my desire to provide the full spectrum of patient care, from prevention to treatment to recovery.
I received a combined MD/MBA degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, graduating with honors. I then completed my Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program in Boston, where I was appointed Chief Resident and Editor-in-Chief of the Orthopaedic Journal of Harvard Medical School.
Q: Why did you choose to focus your practice sports medicine?
As a physical therapist I was passionate about caring for athletes of all ages, so it was a natural transition to also focus on sports medicine as a surgeon. I received fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Surgery at The Steadman Clinic in Vail where I took care of professional athletes from the NHL, NFL, NBA, PGA as well as became a Team Physician for the US Ski and Snowboard teams.
Q: What is the most personally satisfying aspect of your work?
I enjoy helping patients overcome their physical challenges to get them back to the activities they love. My background in fitness and rehab enables me to see a broader set of solutions which allows me to provide my patients a distinctive expertise in sports performance, injury prevention, surgical management and recovery.
I specialize in the operative and non-operative treatment of sports medicine injuries, with a focus on:
- Complex knee, shoulder and elbow surgery
- Cartilage restoration, PRP and regenerative medicine
- General sports injury prevention and care
- Exercise testing and return to sport evaluation
Q: What sets Colorado Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics apart from other groups?
Colorado Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics (COSMO) has reimagined the typical surgical clinic by building performance, prevention and recovery services that complement surgical care and biologics therapy.
Q: Why did you decide to join a practice in Denver, Colorado?
We’ve enjoyed living in Denver and chose this city for its healthy lifestyle and access to mountain activities. My husband, Stuart, who works for Medtronic, and I have two boys, Carter (7) and Hudson (4), and an aging Black Labrador, Knuckles. Snowboarding, running, biking, hiking and the sort is where you will find us – we enjoy being active. Currently, we are balancing snow sports and hockey, as Stuart is coaching both boys’ hockey teams in Littleton.
